Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy and evaluate the false negative rate of five cervical smear methods in the detection of cervical preneoplastic lesions and squamous cell carcinoms.

Materials and Methods: Forty five patients known to have cervical squamous cell lesion were assigned to Papanicolaou smear in five different ways, i.e. A) Cotton tipped wood applicator at the exocervix and the endocervical canal, B) Cotton tipped wood appilicator at the posterior vaginal fornix and the endocervical canal, C) Cytobrush at the endocervical canal, D) Cervix brush, and E) Cyto-spatula, At the completion of cytologic study, all the subjects were done colposcopically directed biopsy and/ or endocervical curettage.

Results: The false negative rate was 58.5% in A), 35.6% in B), 11.1% in C), 4.4% in D), and 17.1% in E), respectively. In premenopausal patients, the rates of smears without endocervical cell are as follows A) 81.1%, B) 59.5%, C)5.4%, and E) 10.8%.

Conslusion: Cervix brush or cytobrush appears to be effective in the detection of premalignant and malignant lesions of the uterine cervix.
